Steven Neal has long been recognized as a leader within the Long Beach and greater Los Angeles community. Steven's desire to serve is deeply grounded in the belief that public service is more than a job, it is a responsibility. As Director of the AFL-CIO Community Service Department he is responsible for developing critical programs to serve a constituency that includes more than a half million working men and women throughout Los Angeles County. As the Director of Community Services, Steven is responsible for developing and implementing strategic plans for building coalitions between labor and community and religious organizations to improve the quality of life for their shared constituencies. Lauded for his ability to work with diverse groups of people, Steven has spearheaded a number of campaigns to improve wages, healthcare and education and training programs for members. In his capacity as department director, Steven has fiscal oversight over a department that secures program grants, develops statistical analyses and charts spending patterns. He and his staffs are responsible for preparing and analyzing client statistical reports and managing client case work. Steven also directs politicalorganizing, mobilization and lobbying campaigns on working family issues. Steven is the Assistant Pastor of S.E.A.M. Faith Family Church in Chino. In 1995, he founded Living In Full Effect (L.I.F.E.) Ministries, an outreach ministry which conducts Bible study and enrichment via correspondence, within the California Penal System. Steven Neal has worked for the United Way of Greater Los Angeles, and with several community coalition projects. He is a member of the Los Angeles Branch NAACP, Los Angeles Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a trustee of the Los Angeles A. Philip Randolph Institute, and a Board Member of the Los Angeles Emergency Food and Shelter Program. He is a recipient of the 2007 Californians for Justice Racial Justice Hero Award, 2003 Pediatric Aids Community Activist award, 1999 Harbor Area United Way Champion Diversity Award and the 1995 Communications Workers of America Community Service Award. Steven has served on the Los Angeles Police Commission on Ethical Charities and the African American Summit on Violence Prevention. He is board member for Dare U To Care, Fairfield Branch YMCA, Long Beach for Equitable College Career Options, Long Beach Freedom School, Pacific Gateway (Long Beach) Workforce Investment Board and a member of the Los Angeles Community Financial Resource Center Corporate Leadership Board. Steven and his wife Katonja are the parents of five daughters, one son and have seven grandchildren |
