9th District FactsThe Ninth District is a primarily residential community, home to approximately 55,000 residents. The neighborhood is bounded to the west, north and east by the Long Beach city limits (the Rancho Dominguez unincorporated county area and the cities of Compton, Paramount, Bellflower and Lakewood), and to the south by South Street.
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the neighborhood was home to an incredibly diverse community. Roughly 58% of the population is Hispanic, roughly 18.6% is African American, roughly 9% were non-Hispanic whites, and roughly 9% were Asian. There is also a significant Tongan and Samoan population in the district.
There are business and retail districts centered along most major streets in the area, including Atlantic Ave., Artesia Blvd., Long Beach Blvd., and Cherry Ave.
There are some industrial businesses, mostly along the eastern edge of the district between Cherry Ave. and Paramount Blvd. The district is home to Houghton Park and Jordan High School. |
