Empower Uptown PB Assemblies are Set!

Public Assemblies for the Empower Uptown Participatory Budgeting Forum have been set for October and November. All residents age 14 and up are encouraged to attend and bring their best ideas for projects their neighborhood needs. This is the beginning to a process that will decide directly how to spend a quarter of a million dollars!! See below for times & dates!

Long Beach District 9 Councilmember Rex Richardson is launching an exciting new initiative called participatory budgeting, which will engage District 9 community members in deciding directly how to spend at least $250,000 of the city budget.

Participatory Budgeting (PB) is an innovative, democratic process that gives community residents the opportunity to help decide how to spend a portion of a public budget. While it is relatively new in the U.S., the White House has already recognized PB as a best practice of civic engagement. PB gives District 9 community members real power to make real decisions over real money.

We invite you to our first community-wide Participatory Budgeting Assembly Thursday, October 16th, starting at 6:30pm at Colin Powell Academy (Cafeteria). Through participatory budgeting, District 9 residents and stakeholders will brainstorm projects to improve their communities, vet those projects, and vote on their top projects. Come learn about the city budget and brainstorm project ideas to improve your community!
