#PopUPTown Social

#PopUPTown Social is a monthly “pop-up” gathering, celebrating local artists and music, local residents, local food, and local Uptown pride. The event is a fun way to activate space along Atlantic Ave. in anticipation of new improvements and development that is on the horizon..

The Social takes place in the Learning Garden of the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library every 4th Thursday of each month from February to September, featuring live local entertainment, food, a bar garden, vendors, and a fun kids’ activity.

Bring a lawn chair, relax, and have a good time with friends and neighbors!

Uptown Jazz Festival

The Uptown Jazz Festival is a yearly FREE community concert held at Houghton Park that features a taste of jazz sounds for all ages to enjoy. The event includes live performances, a DJ, amazing food, a beer garden, numerous vendor booths, and a kids’ zone. The festival, going on its 8th year, continues to unite the North Long Beach community, in addition to attracting annual attendees outside of the city.

In 2019, over 9,500 attendees enjoyed a day of great food, good company, and amazing music from the Con Funk Shun, Boxcar 7, Susie Hansen’s Latin Jazz Band, DW3, Biscuits and Gravy, and DJ Mr. Quick. In 2019, we also enjoyed live entertainment provided by KJLH. Check out pictures from the 2019 Uptown Jazz Festival here.

Veterans Day Celebration

The Veterans Day Celebration is a free community event for all to enjoy and honor our veterans. The day kicks off with the Annual Veterans Day Parade. Then, we open Atlantic Ave. from South St. to 60th St. for an open street fair that includes Vets Fest and veterans services, community resources, live entertainment, great food, a beer garden, vendor booths, a Kid’s Zone, and more.

Last year, more than 3,500 attendees joined us for a celebratory day. We are proud to present a fun, modern, and distinguished special event unlike any other to honor veterans!

D9 Farmer’s Market

The D9 Farmer’s Market will once again open in the Spring of 2019. It is hosted by the Harbor Area Farmers’ Markets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library Learning Garden (next to 5870 Atlantic Ave., 90805) from 3:00-7:00 PM.

Enjoy farm fresh vendors, goods and tasty treats.

State of the 9th District

The State of the 9th District is an annual event that allows us to share updates on what we have accomplished together to create a more vibrant Uptown.

Here are some highlights from the January 2018 State of the District held at Veterans Valor Plaza at Houghton Park:

  • Public Safety Improvements– The murder rate in our city is at a historic low, and fell 33% in 2017. District 9 statistics are even more impressive, with a 37.5% decrease in the murder rate, and a whopping 41.7% decrease in residential burglaries from 2014 to 2017. In addition, since the restoration of Paramedic Rescue 12 in March 2017, citywide response times have dropped by 30 seconds, and in North Long Beach, emergency response times have dropped by an average of 3 whole minutes.
  • Continued Development Progress of “Main Street” Atlantic Avenue– Three exciting new developments are in late stages of development and are on track to break ground soon!
  • Uptown Planning Land Use and Neighborhoods Strategy (UPLAN) Process to Commence
  • New D9 Farmers Market Launching
  • Formation of the Pet Education Team 90805 (PET 90805)– PET 90805 formed to help advise our office on animal issues, and to help educate our district on ways to make a difference in our high rates of stray animals.
  • For the Record– A partnership with the nonprofit “We Are the Next” to launch “For the Record,” a new placemaking installation along the public sidewalk through the Atlantic corridor between 60th St. and Artesia Blvd. This installation will document the story of the various populations and individuals who have lived in North Long Beach over the last 200 years.
