People can get colorful and provide feedback on the Uptown open space plan — celebrating the North Town Open Space Master Plan — at the Color Block Walk.
The event runs 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Myrtle Avenue and East 67th Street. Vice Mayor Rex Richardson will host the half-mile walk, which runs around the 91 Freeway and includes washable color powders. People are encouraged to wear clothes they don't mind getting colored and can bring dogs. Features include light refreshments, live DJ and prizes.
Richardson's office has been working with the departments of Health and Human Services; Parks, Recreation and Marine; and nonprofit City Fabrick since last spring to develop the plan for North Long Beach — identifying new public open spaces.
“Color Block Walk is an exciting, engaging, and family friendly way to cap off our successful North Town Open Space planning process,” Richardson said in a release. “Be on hand as we reimagine the way we activate open space right here in Long Beach.”
The team created an outreach to the community to find underused land that could be made into open spaces. Thousands of residents and stakeholders participated in planning last year, identifying more than 140 ideas. Prioritization was given, with the ideas narrowed down. The upcoming walk will be a temporary showcase of the 91 Freeway Embankment Loop, which had the most community members' votes.
Limited parking is available along 67th and Penfold streets and walk attendees are encouraged to use alternative transportation.
